Two ships arrived in the Cook Islands in the South Pacific in March of last year. One was a familiar sight: a massive cruise ship, bringing hundreds of tourists to the pristine shores of this nation of 15,000 people. To Mr. Brown, the cruise ship represented his country’s troubling dependence on tourism. He described the other vessel, owned by an international mining company, as a harbinger of incredible wealth. The Cook Islands is at the vanguard of a quest to mine the ocean floor for minerals used in electric car batteries.

I moved to Alaska from Oregon to find work opportunities in the mining industry about 20 years ago. In Alaska, rotational work cycles can last up to six weeks with no break. During that time, I made just over $1,800 a week working nearly 82 hours a week. AdvertisementMy work opportunities are now limitedI plan to go back to rotational work after a year or two to enjoy life a little more. Then, I want to return to rotational work to have more time to enjoy life.

watch nowThe Bitcoin network on Friday evening completed its fourth "halving," reducing the rewards earned by miners to 3.125 bitcoins from 6.25. After the 2012, 2016 and 2020 halvings, the bitcoin price ran up about 93x, 30x and 8x, respectively, from its halving day price to its cycle top. Hash rates are a measure of the computational power used to process transactions on the bitcoin network. "The market so far has seen bitcoin mining stocks as mere BTC proxies, in absence of bitcoin ETFs," said Bernstein analyst Gautam Chhugani. "[The] Bitcoin halving is already partially priced in by the market and we do not expect prices to increase significantly following the halving event," the firm's Marion Laboure said in a note Thursday, adding that it "has been widely anticipated in advance due to the nature of the Bitcoin algorithm."

The bitcoin halving is set to take place in the next few days, which will cut miners' main stream of revenue in half. "We believe a bitcoin price above $60,000-$65,000 means the halving is de-risked for nearly all public miners," Needham analyst John Todaro wrote in a note to clients on Tuesday. It currently costs miners between $36,000 and $52,700 to mine a single bitcoin, Todaro said. Miners offer amplified exposure to bitcoin's price action, which has been more volatile since the launch of bitcoin ETFs introduced more leverage to the market. "That's propelled bitcoin to a threshold where the miners are really generating healthy economics," said Colonnese.

Some bitcoin miners won't survive when the upcoming halving slashes their revenue in half, but the ones that do survive will thrive, and Rosenblatt Securities says TeraWulf is its top pick in the category. The firm initiated coverage of the bitcoin miner with a buy rating and $4.20 price target Tuesday. Mining stocks like TeraWulf offer amplified exposure to the bitcoin price, with enhanced returns during bull cycles but increased volatility in bear markets. TeraWulf's estimated cost to mine a bitcoin this year is about $25,000 ahead of the halving and $37,000 after. Miners have been hard at work to enhance their fleet efficiency and lower their operating costs — largely power costs.

European markets look poised to open higher Thursday as investors look to build momentum following a shaky start to the new trading quarter. The pan-European Stoxx 600 index closed higher Wednesday, shaking off some of the negative sentiment after euro zone inflation fell more than expected. Thursday is light on the earnings front, while the release of notes from the European Central Bank's last monetary policy meeting is expected to shine some light on the path for interest rate cuts. In Asia-Pacific, markets rebounded following a selloff in the previous session. Meanwhile, U.S. stock futures inched higher overnight as investors digested comments from U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell.

A lower-risk way to play the gold breakout from here

We'll break down the rally in gold, why gold miners have been trailing it and the options trades I'm putting on from here accordingly. Investing in gold and silver mining companies, rather than purchasing the precious metals has frequently been promoted as a way to get "leverage" to the price of gold or silver. Notice that the share price of the VanEck Gold Miners ETF (GDX ) tracking the companies, has declined more than 15.5% since the highs in April of 2023. GDX GLD mountain 2023-04-13 VanEck Gold Miners ETF (companies) vs. SPDR Gold shares ETF (commodity) It should be said that GDX and Newmont Corporation pay dividends, whereas gold itself does not. Additionally gold miners are sometimes located in suboptimal geographic locations/jurisdictions where they may be subject to geopolitical factors beyond the price volatility of the commodities they produce.

The October jobs report showed a cooling labor market in the U.S., with many sectors showing minimal or negative growth as the economy added a relatively meager 150,000 jobs overall. If private education was included in that category, as some economists choose to do, there would have 89,000 jobs added in that group. "It's usually a bad thing when job growth is led by the public service, but in this case it is long overdue. The private sector jobs recovery was much stronger and much faster than that of the public sector," said Julia Pollak, chief economist at ZipRecruiter. Information shed 9,000 jobs, while transportation and warehousing lost more than 12,000 jobs.

China’s graphite curbs send green warning shot

Global demand for graphite, seen at 770,000 tonnes this year, is expected to treble by 2033, according to estimates by Fastmarkets graphite analyst Georgi Georgiev. China currently accounts for 64% of the global production of natural graphite and more than half of the artificial equivalent. More importantly, the People’s Republic refines more than 90% of the graphite into high-purity material used in EV batteries. This echoes the approach China used earlier this year to restrict exports of gallium and germanium, two metals used in chips and fibre optic cables, triggering a fall in international shipments. Mining graphite in Europe, which wants to lead in EV adoption, is simply more expensive, says Aiden Lavelle, CEO of miner European Green Metals.

At one point Monday morning, bitcoin surged above $30,000 in a sudden spike on an unconfirmed report that the iShares spot bitcoin ETF had been formally approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Cryptocurrencies briefly soared to start the week as hopeful investors weighed the likelihood that the U.S. will finally see a bitcoin ETF in the coming months. Last week, bitcoin had jumped on Friday on news that the SEC would not appeal a ruling in Grayscale's lawsuit against regulators. In June of 2022, Grayscale sued the SEC over its denial of the company's application to convert the popular Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) to an ETF. To be sure, bitcoin is coming off its worst week since Aug. 18 and first negative week in six.

Hancock has steadily built its stake since September, when Albemarle Corp lodged its bid for Liontown. The U.S. miner needs 75% support from Liontown investors who vote on the deal to succeed with its bid. Under Australian takeover rules, a single shareholder must declare its intention if its stake moves above 19.9%.

PwC’s annual report on the South African mining industry said global drops in some commodity prices following the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to the reduced profits. But so did South Africa’s local challenges of currency fluctuations, high inflation, power blackouts and logistical problems in exporting minerals because of deteriorating road, rail and port infrastructure. South Africa has an opportunity to benefit from that demand, which also would need millions of dollars in investment, the report said. “This presents several opportunities for South Africa which could reshape industries, diversify the economy and drive future prosperity." The output from South Africa’s 130-year-old gold mining industry has been slumping for more than 20 years.

Analysts polled by Reuters had forecast a 0.1% month-over-month rise in July. Overall, the service-producing sector edged up 0.1% in July while the goods-producing sector posted a 0.3% contraction. The manufacturing sector shrank by 1.5% over June, the biggest month-on-month drop since April 2021, largely due to firms drawing down their inventories. The bank held its key overnight interest rate at 5% on Sept 6, noting the economy had entered a period of weaker growth.
